Nice approach - when you want to imply G chord play melody on E string so by virtue of fretting
the open G rings - then want to imply D, move melody to B string that naturally mutes the G string
and the low D string rings more
With A just play chord down the neck
Also really helps to be in open D tuning

Use similar muting technique for when playing without and with drums
